CMA CGM takes delivery of eco-friendly ship

Vessel is equipped with Fast Oil Recovery System and electronically-controlled engine to cut consumption.

CMA CGM has announced the delivery of the CMA CGM Figaro, a 8500 Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containership built by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industry.

The CMA CGM Figaro is registered in France and will sail under the French flag.

In compliance with CMA CGM's environmental policy, and like all new vessels of this type ordered by the group, the CMA CGM Figaro is equipped with a combination of innovative environmental features, including:

* a Fast Oil Recovery System, which enables bunkers to be rapidly recovered at any time, hence significantly limiting the environmental consequences should there be an incident at sea;

* an electronically-controlled engine, thus reducing oil and fuel consumption by 25% and 3% respectively. Thanks to this new engine, the vessel can – if necessary – be operated at super eco-speed (14 to 15 knots);

* pre-equipment to connect to a port’s electricity supply during operations.

According to the company, the new vessel will operate on the Asia to Middle East Gulf trade, while volumes and freight rates are still recovering.

"This new vessel is a strategic asset for CMA CGM and proves the group’s ability to move forward in the current economic context," the company said in a statement.

The CMA CGM Figaro left the Samsung shipyard on 20th April at 8 am Korean time, on its way to Tianjin, China.

As part of the CIMEX service, the vessel will be placed on the following the port rotation: Tianjin, Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Port Kelang, Khor Fakkan, Jebel Ali, Bandar Abbas, Port Kelang, Nansha, Tianjin.
