Cruise line to install 'fuel-saving' technology

European cruise line aims to reduce fuel consumption with decision support system.

Eniram Ltd., a provider of decision support systems for the shipping industry, has announced that it has signed a five-year agreement to provide FLEET, its web-based reporting solution for fleet level performance, to nine ships of the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet.

The latest agreement follows an initial contract with Norwegian in 2008 for Eniram’s Dynamic Trimming Assistant (DTA) [pictured], an onboard system for dynamically monitoring and optimizing the trim on individual vessels in order to make bunkering savings and improve environmental performance. FLEET works by analyzing cumulative data collected from vessels equipped with DTA.

"Following an in-depth technical evaluation, Norwegian has now signed the five-year contract with Eniram after recognizing the major operational benefits that the FLEET software can provide," Eniram said. The system is expected to be fully operational this month.

Brian Swensen, Senior Vice President, Technical Operations & Refurbishment at Norwegian, stated: “This latest contract with Eniram extends our ongoing relationship with this pioneering decision support provider. We believe that FLEET will provide us with an unsurpassed capability to make ongoing operational fuel costs savings, as well as allowing us to reduce our vessels’ environmental footprint.”

Philip Padfield, CEO of Eniram, added: "Eniram’s onboard ship decision management tools are a powerful way to optimize the performance of individual vessels, and offer a seamless path to the extended capabilities offered by our FLEET management software. This contract from Norwegian shows just how this strategy can be realized for ship operators that want a complete picture of their fleet’s operational performance."

Norwegian will be able to analyze single and multiple vessel performance and will receive frequent hull aging analysis in order to monitor the effect of changes in a ship’s hull, changes in the drag area, and the effects of different cleaning methods. In addition, real time information on vessel fouling will aim to optimize cleaning costs and schedules, and minimize fouling related fuel loss.

Padfield concluded: "We are delighted that Norwegian has chosen Eniram as its partner to manage and optimize its fleet using our industry leading FLEET software together with our analysis services. We know that Norwegian is committed to operating its fleet in the most economic and environmentally friendly way and we are proud that Eniram is a key element in working towards this goal."
