Corvus Energy AS has introduced Blue Whale NxtGen Power, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) energy storage system developed in collaboration with BYD Energy Storage, marking the first commercial product to emerge from a strategic partnership between the two companies announced in December 2025.

The system is built on Corvus Energy's existing NxtGen product platform and is designed for vessels where power demand — rather than energy capacity — defines system performance. It is said to be suited to tugs, workboats, offshore vessels using batteries for power optimisation, and large ferries requiring rapid charging between crossings.

Under the arrangement, BYD Energy Storage supplies battery cell technology and cell stack manufacturing, while Corvus Energy takes responsibility for overall system design and architecture, marine safety features, battery management systems (BMS), cybersecurity, the digital battery passport, and class approval. Final assembly, testing and lifetime service support will also be provided by Corvus.

Corvus Energy says the partnership allows it to bring solutions to market more quickly while retaining control over safety, compliance, performance and long-term customer support.

The Blue Whale NxtGen Power shares core elements — including stack interface, battery module design, BMS and cell string assembly — with the broader NxtGen portfolio. According to Corvus, this means existing Blue Whale NxtGen customers will experience largely unchanged installation practices, service procedures and spare parts management, reducing training requirements and operational complexity.

Thor Humerfelt, Head of Product Innovation at Corvus Energy, commented: "LFP technology has advanced significantly in recent years and now offers a highly cost-effective solution for a wide range of maritime applications. By combining BYD Energy Storage's technology leadership, manufacturing expertise and global scale with Corvus Energy's maritime experience, we can accelerate innovation, reduce system costs and deliver even greater value to our customers. This partnership will strengthen and expand our product portfolio and support the maritime industry's transition to zero-emission operations."

Corvus Energy and BYD Energy Storage are set to present Blue Whale NxtGen Power at SMM in Hamburg on 2 September, 12:00, at the Corvus Energy stand in Hall B6, Stand 429.

Headquartered in Norway, Corvus Energy says it has delivered more than 1,400 projects worldwide and claims that more than 50% of vessels globally equipped with zero-emission technology use its systems.

BYD Energy Storage, established in 2008, focuses on the research, development and commercialisation of energy storage systems across utility-scale, commercial and industrial, residential and marine applications.
