UAE refinery tender slated for June 2009

Construction contract for bunker-producing refinery to be awarded after design phase ends in June.

Abu Dhabi Oil Refinery Company (Takreer) plans to issue tenders for the engineering procurement and construction of its Ruwais refinery project in June 2009, the company said.

The contract will be awarded later this year after a front end engineering and design study of the bunker-producing refinery is completed in June, according to Takreer General Manager Jasem al-Sayegh.

US firm UOP LLC, which is part of the American conglomerate Honeywell International Inc. and headquartered in Illinois, was selected in October 2008 to supply technology and engineering services for the expansion project.

UOP commenced the basic engineering design towards the end of 2008. The company said the refinery upgrade was expected to be completed in 2014.

Through an alliance with Albemarle Corp., UOP has also provided a portfolio of catalyst solutions for the new Takreer units. UOP and Albemarle launched the Hydroprocessing Alliance in 2006 to offer a full suite of hydroprocessing solutions to refiners leveraging the expertise of both companies in this area.

Once the construction phase is completed, the Ruwais refinery will be able to produce bunker fuel, gas oil, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, unleaded gasoline, naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), propylene and other hydrocarbon derivatives.

Abu Dhabi Oil Refinery Company is responsible for all the refining activities of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), which sources its bunker fuel from the Ruwais facility.

Fuel oil and gasoil is available ex-pipe to vessels calling at the Ruwais refinery terminal. ADNOC also offers bunkering services to customers at Abu Dhabi.
