Singapore bunker sales fall in June


Sales drop for the second month in a row. Port is still on course to surpass 2007 record.

Bunker sales in Singapore dropped for the second month in a row in June according to the latest monthly figures released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Unlike in 2007, where sales in the world's largest bunker port increased in June compared to May, volumes sold last month slid by 108,600 tonnes to 2,810,400 tonnes. The figure was still 94,000 tonnes higher than sales recorded in the same month last year.

With higher sales in every month so far compared to 2007, Singapore continues to be on course to surpass the previous annual record of 31,546,000 tonnes set last year.

Last month all grades of fuel except 180-centistoke (cst) showed a decline in sales volume compared to May. This trend differs to that seen in 2007 where sales of 380-cst and MGO rose in June, whilst 180-cst, 500-cst and MDO recorded a fall in month-on-month sales.

Sales of 380-cst - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - fell for the second month in a row in June 2008 to 2,075,200 tonnes, a decrease of 82,000 tonnes compared to May. Meanwhile, sales volumes for the port's second-biggest selling product - 500-cst - dropped from 391,300 tonnes in May to 354,800 in June, a decline of 36,500 tonnes.

Sales volumes of marine gasoil (MGO) dropped for the third month in a row in June to 108,400 tonnes from 116,200 recorded the month before. Marine diesel oil sales fell slightly by 300 tonnes last month to 1,100 tonnes after having recorded a small rise of 700 tonnes in May.

180-cst, the only grade to show an increase in month-on-month sales, recorded sales of 235,100 tonnes in June, a rise of 27,800 tonnes compared to May.
