Green initiative to launch first progress report

Report to be revealed at event in Singapore next month.

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) - a coalition of shipping leaders from around the world that is working to achieve a vision of the shipping industry that is both profitable and sustainable by 2040 - is hosting an industry event next month at Traders Hotel, Singapore.

Discussions in Singapore will revolve around the opportunities, innovations and solutions to barriers to further progress in sustainable shipping.

At the event, the SSI is expected to launch its first progress report, which will examine the progress made against the 2040 Vision, and announce future plans for 2013-14.

Results are expected to include at least one new financial model that will reward sustainable performance, making it more accessible; completed pilots and an understanding of how the system could be scaled up to deliver closed loop ship recycling; a clear guide to industry standards with recommended approaches to accelerate uptake; and robust business cases on mixed energy technology, providing the information companies need to adopt already existing eco-efficient technologies and techniques.

Jonathon Porritt, Founder Director of Forum for the Future, will deliver the keynote speech, followed by an industry panel debate to explore and understand the key opportunities for, and obstacles to, advances in all aspects of maritime sustainability.

About the SSI

The SSI is facilitated by Forum for the Future (forumforthefuture.org), the global sustainability non-profit, in conjunction with NGO World Wildlife Fund. A number of global companies are already taking part in the SSI, representing ship owners and charterers, shipbuilders, engineers and service providers, banking, insurance, and classification societies.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is to show that collaborative action is possible, to mobilize support across the industry, and to demonstrate that shipping can contribute to - and thrive in - a sustainable future.
