'Zero emission' yacht presented in Florida

New hybrid yacht is said to cut fuel consumption by up to 40 percent.

The Ferretti Group, one of the world leaders in the design, building and marketing of luxury motor-yachts, has presented its new zero emission-low consumption yacht at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, at Allied Marine’s large in-water display.

According to Ferretti, the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 is the first “Zero Emission Mode” motor yacht of its category. The Long Range 23 combines two revolutionary technologies, the “Zero Emission Mode” hybrid (diesel-electric) propulsion system and the FER.WEY (Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht) "trans-planing hull".

Powered by its hybrid propulsion system, the trans-planing hull claims to cut fuel consumption by 40 percent with a range of 1,000 miles.

The Mochi Craft Long Range 23 measures 75 foot 6 inches and has already been awarded the "Trophée de l'Innovation 2009" and "Best Layout 2009" in Cannes this year. It is also the only boat in the world to obtain RINA "Green Star Clean Energy and Clean Propulsion" certification.

The Mochi Craft is said to be able to operate in five modes:

*with the diesel engines running the electric motors and recharging the lithium ion ferride batteries;

*with the electric motors disconnected from the diesels but driving the propellers with the help of a generator and battery pack;

*with electric motors on battery power driving the propellers in silence; with all on-board utilities powered by the battery pack; and

*with the yacht plugged into shore power while overnight in port.

Frabetti said the Mochi Craft costs about $1 per mile to operate, compared with about $4 per mile for a conventional diesel-powered yacht.
