Hong Kong has completed its first green methanol bunkering operation, with 500 tonnes of the alternative fuel delivered on 5 March.

The transfer was carried out by Da Qing 268, China’s first dual-fuel methanol-powered bunkering vessel, which is managed by Wah Kwong Ship Management (Shenzhen) Limited. During the operation, the vessel conducted a ship-to-ship bunkering to CM Hong Kong, described as the world’s first methanol dual-fuel ro-ro vessel.

The green methanol used in the operation was supplied by CIMC ENRIC and delivered through the bunkering network of Sinopec (Hong Kong) Petroleum Holding Company Limited. The receiving vessel is owned by China Merchants Group.

Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited said the operation demonstrates Hong Kong’s readiness to support green methanol bunkering and highlights cooperation across the fuel supply chain, including production, storage, transportation, bunkering and end use.

The company added that it intends to contribute to Hong Kong’s decarbonisation ambitions and the wider transition towards lower-emission fuels in the maritime sector.
