Vale, the Brazilian mining and logistics company, has joined the Global Ethanol Association (GEA) as a founding member, the association announced on 11 December.

The organisation said Vale is among the companies exploring ethanol as a marine fuel and described the miner’s initiatives as an example of how alternative energy solutions can support the maritime sector’s transition.

"Vale is truly one step ahead of major competition, pioneering the use of ethanol in the maritime industry and setting a powerful example of how innovation and sustainability can move the sector forward," the association stated in its announcement.

The GEA added that it plans to collaborate with Vale on scaling solutions related to ethanol use in shipping.

Vale operates a fleet within its logistics network for transporting iron ore and other commodities and has been assessing various alternative fuels as part of its emissions-reduction strategy for shipping. The firm's first biofuel-powered iron ore voyage took place in October 2023, and it has also installed rotor sails on multiple ore carriers in its fleet.

The Global Ethanol Association promotes ethanol as a marine-fuel option and collaborates with industry stakeholders on implementation, supply-chain development and regulatory considerations.

Vale’s membership comes amid increasing interest in alternative fuels across the shipping industry, as vessel operators assess options such as methanol, ammonia, LNG and biofuels in response to tightening emissions expectations.
