Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun has acquired a stake in Dutch wind-assisted propulsion technology company Econowind, highlighting growing industry interest in decarbonisation solutions.

The Imabari-based shipping company, which operates a diversified fleet, said it selected Econowind for its wind propulsion technology. Nissen Kaiun is exploring the installation of Econowind's VentoFoil systems on its vessels as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

"We recognised that Econowind has a mature wind-assisted ship propulsion solution in the market," a spokesperson for Nissen Kaiun said. "As one of the market leaders, Econowind delivers proven technology. Making shipping more sustainable is a top priority at Nissen Kaiun."

The spokesperson added that the company is considering installing the large version of Econowind's VentoFoils on its vessels, describing the technology as well-suited to maritime conditions while being easy for crews to operate.

Econowind has developed the VentoFoil, a wing-shaped wind-assist device designed to help reduce fuel consumption in shipping. The technology uses what the company describes as suction-based airflow control to deliver energy savings.

Econowind claims to have sold more than 130 units globally, with customers spanning shortsea and deepsea operators across various market segments.

Daan Koornneef, chief executive of Econowind, said the partnership would support expansion of the VentoFoil product line, including larger units for deepsea shipping, and could open opportunities for future production in Asia.

"Nissen Kaiun is the perfect partner with a large network in Japan and wider Asian markets," Koornneef commented. "With them becoming a shareholder, we can expand our footprint and accelerate the development of larger units for the deepsea markets."

The investment comes as shipowners worldwide seek immediate measures to cut emissions ahead of tightening regulatory targets. Wind-assisted ship propulsion is gaining attention as a fuel-neutral solution that can be combined with various engine types and fuel strategies.

The financial terms of Nissen Kaiun's stake in Econowind were not disclosed.
