Cruise operator ups fuel surcharge

Fuel surcharge is adjusted by cruise company to offset rise in bunker costs.

MSC Cruises is raising the fuel surcharge that was implemented last year on cruise fares from $6 to $8 per passenger, per day. The price per stateroon will be $16.

Speaking about the reasons behind the price increase, Richard E. Sasso, President and Chief Executive Officer of MSC Cruises USA, said ""We all know that international oil prices have risen rapidly over the past several months, bringing the cost of fuel, whether for the family car or a cruise ship, to record highs. To offset these unprecedented costs, we must make an adjustment to the fuel surcharge implemented late last year."

The new surcharge will be applicable to new bookings made on or after July 1st 2008 for departures after December 1st 2008.

MSC Cruises is a division of Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. and is the third-largest cruise operator in the world, after Carnival Corporation & plc and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
