Singapore bunker sales rise for second month

Accumulated sales (28,175,800 tonnes) are higher than in 2013 for only the second time this year during the month of August.

Bunker sales in Singapore rose to their second highest level of the year so far during the month of August, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Total sales at the world's leading bunker port increased last month by just 6,200 tonnes, or 0.2 percent, to 3,668,800 tonnes, up from 3,662,600 tonnes in July. It is the second consecutive volume rise and only the third month-on-month increase this year.

In comparison with the corresponding month last year, August volumes were up by 180,700 tonnes, or 5.2 percent. It is the first time in three months that year-on-year volumes have risen. So far this year, monthly bunker sales have been up on four occasions compared to 2013.

Accumulated bunker sales for the year so far are 28,175,800 tonnes, which represents an increase of 60,200 tonnes compared to the first eight months of 2013 (28,115,600 tonnes). The figure is, however, below the volumes sold during the corresponding period in 2012 (28,949,200 tonnes) and 2011 (28,619,700 tonnes), but above the 26,959,600 tonnes sold between January and August in 2010.

Sales of 380 centistoke (cSt) - Singapore's largest-selling bunker grade - rose by 18,500 tonnes, or 0.7 percent, in August to 2,736,700 tonnes - the third highest figure of the year so far and the second consecutive increase. In comparison with the corresponding month last year, 380 cSt sales were up by 165,800 tonnes, or 6.4 percent.

500 cSt volumes declined from July's second highest ever figure of 737,800 tonnes to 728,100 tonnes - the third highest ever figure and only the fifth time that 500 cSt sales have surpassed 700,000 tonnes. The result is 35,100 tonnes, or 5.1 percent, higher than in August 2013. Year-on-year sales of 500 cSt have only declined once so far this year - during the month of March.

Below are tables of bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade in 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 with accumulated totals in the bottom row.
