The potential for using LNG to meet the challenge of marine emission targets will be tackled at the upcoming Gastech exhibition, due to be held at the ExCeL, London, from 8 - 11 October.

A select group of some of the world's most influential energy figures will explain how advances in technology are driving the global gas industry. The exhibition will showcase some of the latest technologies, innovations, products, services and suppliers involved in the energy industry.

The Centres of Technical Excellence (CoTEs) exhibition floor seminars are free to attend educational theatres dedicated to developments in gas technology, and will feature key associations and companies involved in driving technological advancements within the industry.

Touching upon all areas of the gas supply chain, the 12 CoTEs streams will feature content based on the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. They include gas processing; unconventional gas; floating LNG; cryogenics; LNG as a shipping fuel; offshore and subsea technology; pipelines and transmission; power generation; carbon capture and storage.

Commenting on the issue of LNG as a shipping fuel, Nick Brown, Marine Communications Manager for Lloyd's Register, said: "LNG has emerged as a potential fuel of the future. It is already in use in some short sea applications but can it make the leap to global availability? Technical, operational and commercial considerations need to be addressed to enable the widespread adoption of LNG as a marine fuel. Accordingly, Lloyd's Register, the leader in LNG carrier classification, has developed a 'LNG as a Shipping Fuel' CoTE programme to help answer the big picture, 'Is LNG the marine fuel of the future?'."

Dr Paul Jukes, Fellow with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) and president of MCS Kenny, said: "The CoTE seminars offer an excellent opportunity for IMarEST to present its expertise and to be associated with the Gastech brand. Through the IMarEST participation at the CoTE seminars we see the opportunity to reach out to the industry, attract new members and create greater awareness of the work of the Institute. We are in the process of developing the Offshore Special Interest Group (SIG) and see our participation in the CoTE seminars playing an important part in this task."
