Record: Singapore sells 40.9m tonnes in 2010


Bunker volumes up 12.4 percent as landmark sales figure is achieved in 2010.



Bunker sales in Singapore reached a landmark 40.9 million tonnes in 2010, according to data released today by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Sales volumes at the world's leading bunker port rose by 4.51 million tonnes, or 12.39 percent, from 36,386,700 tonnes in 2009. It is the first time that annual bunker sales have exceeded 40 million tonnes in Singapore.

The port recorded positive results in a number of areas, cementing its leading global position in terms of vessel arrival tonnage and bunker sales.

Vessel Arrivals

Vessel arrivals in terms of shipping tonnage reached 1.92 billion gross tons (GT) in 2010, an increase of 7.5 percent from the 1.78 billion GT achieved in 2009. Container ships and tankers were the top contributors, accounting for 32.0 percent and 29.7 percent of the total vessel arrival tonnage respectively.

Container and Cargo Throughput

Container traffic in 2010 totalled 28.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), a 9.9 percent increase over the 25.9 million TEUs recorded in 2009. Total cargo throughput also increased by 6.4 per cent to 502.5 million tonnes from 472.3 million tonnes the previous year.

The Singapore Registry of Ships

The Singapore Registry of Ships grew by 6.9 per cent or 3.2 million gross tons in 2010. As of end December 2010, the total tonnage of ships under the Singapore flag was 48.8 million gross tons, putting Singapore among the top 10 ship registries in the world.
