Molgas, the Spain-based energy group, has completed the first LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Palermo, marking the first time the Sicilian port has handled LNG as a marine fuel.
According to Molgas, the operation required the coordinated efforts of teams from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Greece, and involved deploying three tank trucks to test the ferry’s fuel systems before the LNG loading was carried out.
"This milestone is the result of months of preparation, the coordinated efforts of teams from several different countries, and a 10–12-hour operation executed with no margin for error," the supplier said.
"Every port that carries out its first bunkering operation takes a meaningful step toward a cleaner and more sustainable maritime future," Molgas added.
The firm explained that it intends to continue expanding LNG bunkering operations across further ports, stating it would move “port by port, towards more sustainable shipping.”
Headquartered in Madrid, Molgas Energy Group operates downstream LNG and renewable gases across Europe, providing a range of services, including ship-to-ship, truck-to-ship and terminal-to-ship operations.
The Port of Palermo serves as a key hub for ferry traffic in the central Mediterranean, connecting Sicily with mainland Italy and other destinations across the region.
