Bunker Index (BIX) hits 2009 record


Average Global Bunker Price reaches $541.11 per tonne as 2009 record breaks the $540 barrier.



Bunker Index (BIX), the leading global benchmark index for the marine fuel industry rose to its highest 2009 level yesterday as prices continued to surge for the eighth day in succession.

Bunker Index (BIX) - the Average Global Bunker Price (AGBP) for all individual port price assessments published on the Bunker Index website - rose by $3.88 per tonne to $541.11 per tonne, surpassing Monday's 2009 record of $537.23 per tonne and the previous 2009 peak reached on August 25th of $533.81 per tonne.

The average bunker price has now risen by $151.18, or 38.8 percent over the last six months having been at $389.93 per tonne on April 20th.

Over the same six month period, the Bunker Index 380 CST (BIX 380 CST) has seen the average global price of 380-centistoke (cst) rise by almost 50 percent. Yesterday's price of $462.23 per tonne is $153.70, or 49.8 percent, higher than the $308.53 per tonne level recorded on April 20th.

Meanwhile, the Bunker Index 180 CST (BIX 180 CST) rose $3.28 yesterday to $478.80 per tonne. The figure is $149.49, or 45.33 percent higher than six months ago.
