PitPoint MD hails progress towards '100% clean transport'

Supply of CNG earlier this month was 'an absolute milestone for sustainable shipping', says Versleijen.

The managing director of alternative fuel supplier PitPoint in the Netherlands, Marja Versleijen, said on Monday that the firm is on target to reach its aim of "100 percent clean transport" - at road and by sea - by 2030.

Earlier this month, TESO's ferry, the Texelstroom, was the first in Europe to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) as part of a project in which PitPoint participated. The ferry has also been technically equipped to run on biomethane, which PitPoint says is "even more sustainable and cleaner than CNG".

PitPoint took on the entire engineering and construction of the biomethane/CNG bunker station that will be used to refuel the Texelstroom. Also, according to PitPoint, TESO's decision to use alternative fuels was partly based on the analysis of data from its CNG and LNG refuelling stations.

Versleijen, who has now been PitPoint's managing director in the Netherlands for around eight months, said the company has been experiencing growth both at home and abroad.

As regards environmental legislation, Versleijen noted that, following the Paris climate change conference, "the EU is tightening emission standards, Norway will only allow electric cars from 2025 and cities like Paris and Madrid are on the eve of a diesel ban," whilst adding that "fortunately, the municipality of Amsterdam seems to have woken up in time".

Echoing the words of TESO director Cees de Waal earlier this month, Versleijen said the supply of CNG to the Texelstroom was "an absolute milestone for sustainable shipping".

"We continue to shape the energy transition," Versleijen added.
