The Bunker Index (BIX) global monthly average fell to its lowest level since July 2009 during the month of January, according to Bunker Index price data.

The worldwide bunker average plummeted $65.54, or 11.7 percent, to $494.61 per tonne last month, down from $560.15 per tonne in December. It is the second most significant monthly decline since June 2012.

Over the last four months alone, the global average has fallen $259.21, or 34.4 percent, from $753.82 to $494.61 per tonne.

In comparison with previous years, the January 2015 average is $293.24, or 37.2 percent, lower than the $787.85 per tonne average price recorded in January 2014 and $328.81, or 39.9 percent, below the $823.42 per tonne figure seen in January 2013.
