Bulker to boost fuel efficiency by 20%

New capesize bulker to raise fuel efficiency with advanced features.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has ordered a new capesize bulker that it says will adopt technologies from its next-generation ISHIN-III vessel program to achieve 'high fuel efficiency'.

Universal Shipbuilding Corporation will construct the new ship, slated for completion in late 2014. The newbuilding vessel will adopt a number of technologies which are at the core of the ISHIN-III concept.

Advanced features include:
* A steam turbine that generates electric power using exhaust heat from the engine.
* A hybrid power generation system to convert rotational force from the supercharger into electric power.
* Electric power gained through the steam turbine and hybrid systems will assist vessel propulsion.

The specications of the ship are as follows:
Length: 300.0 metres
Breath: 50.0 metres
Depth: 25.0 metres
Draft: 18.4 metres
Capacity: Approximately 209,000 tonnes
Gross tonnage: Approximately 107,000 tonnes

According to MOL, the new technologies will boost fuel efficiency of the new ship by more than 20 percent compared to conventional capesize vessels, with a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions.

"MOL continues to take a proactive stance in technological development with the aim of reducing the environmental burden of its ships," the company said in a statement.
