Baker Hughes’ NovaLT 16 gas turbine receives RINA type approval for marine propulsion on hydrogen and natural gas


Certification covers operation on natural gas and blends up to 100% hydrogen for marine use.

Baker Hughes has received RINA type approval for its NovaLT 16 gas turbine for marine propulsion applications.

RINA announced on 4 June that the certification covers operation on natural gas and fuel blends of up to 100% hydrogen.

The award was unveiled during Posidonia 2026 in Athens.

RINA said the assessment focused on the NovaLT 16’s suitability for shipboard use, including safety, performance and compliance with maritime rules.

The NovaLT family was originally developed for industrial power generation. The turbine range is 12-17 MW in simple-cycle and up to 22 MW in combined-cycle applications.

Baker Hughes noted that the technology offers compact design, high efficiency, operational flexibility, high availability and maintenance intervals of up to 35,000 hours.

Through a dedicated maritime validation process, the NovaLT 16 has been assessed for onboard installation, regulatory compliance and integration with ship systems.

The energy technology company highlighted that the turbine is designed to operate on natural gas and is being further developed to handle multiple fuel options, including low- and zero-carbon fuels such as 100% hydrogen.

Baker Hughes provides equipment and services across gas systems, rotating machinery, electric power, pumps, valves, gears, sensors, precision instrumentation and industrial software.
