Lloyd's Register (LR) has completed an independent verification and assessment of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for SunRui's suction sail technology, with the findings announced at SMM 2026 in Hamburg.

LR's review examined the aerodynamic performance and wind load calculations for SunRui's 6 m x 26 m suction sail. According to LR, the assessment confirmed that the CFD study was conducted in accordance with recognised industry standards, including LR's own guidance notes on wind-assisted propulsion systems (LR-GN-044), IACS Recommendation 173 and relevant ITTC CFD procedures. LR concluded that the proposed CFD analysis was based on satisfactory standards and could be accepted.

The CFD study assessed by LR reported a maximum thrust of 260 kN for a single suction sail and a maximum combined thrust of 700 kN in simulations involving three sails operating in a ship–sail configuration.

Rob Tustin, North Asia new construction manager at LR, said: "Independent verification has an increasingly important role to play in building confidence in performance predictions and supporting investment decisions. Owners need assurance that projected benefits are based on robust engineering methodologies and recognised standards.

"It helps provide a trusted foundation for evaluating new technologies, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions."

An unnamed SunRui spokesperson is quoted as saying: "Independent verification by Lloyd's Register provides valuable assurance that our analysis has been reviewed against internationally recognised standards. This milestone reinforces confidence in the technical basis of our suction sail technology and supports its application as shipowners continue to explore proven energy-saving solutions."
