China Classification Society (CCS) has awarded the Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI) a type approval certificate for what is described as China’s first all-scenario high-pressure direct-injection methanol single-fuel medium-speed marine engine, alongside a CN-2 emissions approval certificate for marine engines.

The certificates were presented at a ceremony attended by senior representatives from both organisations, including Wang Feng, Director of SMDERI, Qiu Aihua, Deputy Director of SMDERI, Yang Zheng, General Manager of CCS Shanghai Branch, and Pan Zhongbing, Deputy General Manager of CCS Shanghai Branch, as well as department heads and technical experts from both sides.

CCS explained that the issuance of the two certificates marks the completion of both international and domestic compliance verification for the independently developed methanol marine engine, accelerating the path to its commercialisation and practical deployment.

Wang Feng said SMDERI would continue to focus on core low-carbon propulsion technologies and accelerate the industrialisation of methanol-only and ammonia-fueled propulsion equipment.

CCS stated that it intends to deepen cooperation with SMDERI across green, low-carbon, and smart shipping, with the aim of bringing more domestically produced new-energy marine equipment into compliance and contributing to emission reduction across the shipping industry.
