Viking Sun cruise ship featuring bunker-saving engine and scrubber delivered


Viking Ocean Cruises vessel was delivered in Ancona on Monday.



The Viking Sun, the fourth of eight cruise ships Viking Ocean Cruises has ordered from Fincantieri, was delivered at the company's shipyard in Ancona on Monday.

Like its sister ships, the Viking Sun forms part of the small cruise vessel segment. With a gross tonnage of around 47,800 tonnes, it has 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers and a total capacity of over 1,400 people.

The new Viking Ocean Cruises ships feature fuel-efficient engines and an exhaust gas cleaning system, or scrubber, to meet strict environmental regulations.

The first of the series, Viking Star, was built in Marghera and delivered in 2015; the second and the third, Viking Sea and Viking Sky, took to the sea from the Ancona shipyard in 2016 and 2017 repectively.

The last four units are due to be delivered in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

Fincantieri has built 79 cruise ships since 1990, whilst another 32 are currently being designed or built.
