Enterprise Products Partners L.P. has confirmed that it is now the exclusive supplier of RMG 380 residual marine fuel and marine gas oil (MGO) at its Enterprise Hydrocarbons Terminal (EHT), located on the Houston Ship Channel.

In a statement, the US firm explained that RMG 380 and MGO are the primary marine fuels used by deep-draft vessels that dock at the EHT facility. And since June 1, the company has been able to meet the fuelling needs of these customers with the addition of bunkering capabilities at EHT.

Both RMG 380 and MGO are delivered to the terminal by barge and stored in dedicated tanks with a storage capacity of approximately 300,000 barrels. Pipelines then transport the residual and distillate fuels to each of EHT's seven docks.

Commenting on the development, A. James 'Jim' Teague, chief executive officer of Enterprise Products Holdings LLC, remarked: "Being able to fuel ships as they load and offload product at our EHT marine terminal significantly streamlines the process, saving our customers time and money by not having to stop at a third party facility."

"This new service reflects the creativity and commitment of our people as they continue to find new ways to maximize our assets to capitalize on growth opportunities," he added.

Houston setting records

Last year, the port of Houston recorded its best ever annual tonnage figure of 38.3 million tonnes - beating the previous record of 37.8 million tonnes set in 2014.

It was also a record-setting year for the port's container business, which saw the total number of TEUs handled increase by 13 percent to 2.46 million TEUs last year; the previous record was set in 2016 with a volume of 2.18 million TEUs.

New bunker supply activity and storage agreements

Last year saw bunker players establish supply operations and ink new storage agreements in Houston and surrounding areas. Back in May, GCC Bunkers LLC launched its physical supply operation in the Houston and Galveston area. The company entered into agreements for marine fuel storage at Texas International Terminals in Galveston and began offering DMA 0.10% sulphur gasoil, and RMD 80 0.10% sulphur fuel oil.

In the final quarter of 2017, meanwhile, Peninsula Petroleum signed a storage agreement with Houston Fuel Oil Terminal (HOFTI) in a move designed to support the company's bunkering operations in Houston and surrounding ports. The accord also enabled Peninsula to start supplying bunkers ex-pipe to ships calling at the facility.

Elsewhere in Texas, World Fuel Services last year sealed an exclusive agreement to supply marine fuel at the Sunoco Logistics Nederland Terminal.
