Danish ferry to run on biogas and LNG


Vessel is expected to begin operating in 2014.

Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) has reported that a vessel running on biogas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is due to begin operating in the autumn of 2014 on the island of Samsø.

The ferry, SamsoFaergen, is being constructed by Poland's Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. It features Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine technology and will initially operate on LNG until biogas production begins on the island.

According to Soren Stensgard, head of the municipality's technical department, SamsoFaergen will be the first ferry in the European Union (EU) to operate on biogas.

The vessel, estimated to be worth DKK 200 million (USD 36.3 million), will be able to transport 600 passengers and 160 cars.

SamsoFaergen will be deployed on the route between Hou, in the Danish Jutland peninsula, and Samso Island, replacing the existing vessel, Kanhave.

Samsø municipality has a plan in place to be free of fossil fuels by the year 2030.
