Dockyard to build five 'fuel-saving' tankers

Enhanced technology is expected to reduce fuel consumption by around 10 percent.

South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has secured a contract to build five 'fuel-saving' product tankers for New York-listed Scorpio Tankers.

The 52,000 deadweight tonne (DWT) tankers, worth around US$37.4 million each, will be fitted with new propulsion technology including the 'B' type ultra-long stroke electronically controlled main engine. The enhanced technology is expected to reduce the vessels' bunker fuel consumption by around 10 percent compared to existing designs.

Commenting on the deal, Emanuele A. Lauro [pictured], CEO and chairman of Scorpio Tankers said: "These newbuilding contracts represent a milestone for Scorpio Tankers. We are delighted by the cooperation of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard to achieve a design that includes the latest technology available to reduce air emissions, improve fuel consumption, and raise the safety and commercial profile of the vessels."

The vessels are scheduled to be delivered to the company between August 2012 and November 2012.
