Cruise line rewarded for saving fuel

Cruise operator wins award for reducing fuel consumption and preparing its ships for shoreside power.

Costa Cruises has received an award for reducing fuel consumption and preparing its ships for shoreside power.

The Italian cruise line was awarded "Best Company for its commitment to environmental protection" at the annual Italian Shipping Awards, held in Genoa and organised by Lloyd's List.

Costa Cruises reduced its fuel consumption by 9 percent in 2009 compared to the previous year, which in turn resulted in a 24 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, the Costa Luminosa and Costa Delicious, along with future flagship Costa Fabulous, are the first vessels in Italy and among the first in the world to be prepared for shoreside electrical power, also referred to as 'cold ironing'. The clean air practice involves switching off a vessel’s diesel generators in order to use cleaner, shore-based electrical power.

Costa Cruises’ commitment to safeguarding the environment is also reflected in the fact that it has been assigned RINA’s (the Italian Shipping Register’s) Green Star. In 2005 Costa Cruises achieved this important form of recognition of voluntary compliance certifying that all its vessels comply with environmental standards for the prevention of pollution of the marine environment.

The cruise operator also publishes a Sustainability Report, which is available online at www.costacruise.com. The report has been put together by the company voluntarily and is designed to provide comprehensive and transparent information on the effects of corporate activity on the environment and the community.

Gianni Onorato, CEO of Costa Cruises, said: "The environmental commitment is not only a moral priority for us, but a real value that our guests recognize and appreciate, thus becoming a strategic factor."

"Costa Crociere is doing a lot, and successfully, to be at the forefront in this area, as confirmed by the award of the Italian Shipping Awards," added Onorato.
