Fincantieri has held the launch ceremony for Viking Astrea, a new cruise ship being built for cruise line Viking at the Italian shipbuilder’s Ancona yard.
The ceremony was attended by Gilberto Tobaldi, director of the Ancona shipyard, and Ghislain Lemarie, vice president of ship development and construction at Viking.
Viking Astrea has a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 gt, a length of 239 metres, and accommodation for up to 998 passengers across 499 cabins. The vessel will feature a propulsion system partially powered by liquid hydrogen via fuel cells, enabling zero-emission operation — which, the company notes, will allow the ship to access environmentally sensitive marine areas.
As previously reported, Fincantieri held the keel-laying ceremony for Viking Astrea — sister ship to Viking Libra — at its Ancona yard in April 2026, with delivery planned for 2027.
Fincantieri noted that its Ancona shipyard has delivered more than 20 vessels since 2009 and that its relationship with Viking dates back to 2012.
