Maersk and Anemoi to fit rotor sail on container ship in industry first

35-metre rotor sail is due to be installed on an 8,700-TEU ship in mid-2027.

A.P. Moller – Maersk has selected UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies to supply a rotor sail system for one of its container vessels, in what the companies say is the first installation of wind-assisted propulsion technology on a container ship of this type.

Under the agreement, Anemoi will design, manufacture and deliver a fixed rotor sail — 5 metres in diameter and 35 metres high — for installation on a vessel in Maersk's 8,700-TEU Lima-class. Installation is scheduled for mid-2027, with the vessel expected to operate primarily on North and South Atlantic routes during the pilot phase.

Rotor sails, also known as Flettner rotors, use the Magnus effect to generate aerodynamic lift, which provides additional thrust and, according to Anemoi, reduces fuel consumption and associated emissions under suitable operating conditions. Anemoi claims that each rotor sail saves approximately one tonne of fuel per day and around three tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

The technology has previously been deployed across other vessel segments, including bulk carriers. This agreement marks the first time it will be applied to a container vessel carrying general cargo — ranging from consumer goods to industrial equipment.

Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi, remarked: "We're delighted to be working with Maersk on this pioneering project. It's a strong example of how collaboration can support the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion, and we look forward to carrying out the installation and working together as the project progresses."

Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, stated: "Wind-assisted propulsion is one of several promising maritime solutions with the potential to improve vessel efficiency and reduce emissions. It has already been tested in other parts of the shipping sector, and we see this pilot with Anemoi as a valuable opportunity to build practical experience and assess its relevance for our fleet and for container shipping more broadly."

Anemoi, which was incorporated in 2015, will provide engineering support and oversee the integration of the rotor sail with existing onboard systems throughout the installation process.
