The Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) has announced a qualified roster of auditors under its AEA Ammonia Certification System, drawing from six verification and validation bodies (VVBs): Bureau Veritas, DNV, EcoEngineers, EnergyLink Services, SGS China, and TÜV SÜD.
The announcement marks what the Washington, D.C.-based trade association describes as the final implementation step before facilities can be registered and ammonia certificates can be issued under its ongoing pilot programme.
The AEA Ammonia Certification System is designed to facilitate the transparent, trusted international trade of low-emission ammonia. It enables producers, traders, and consumers to demonstrate key environmental attributes — namely carbon footprint and origin — using independently verified data. Every participant in the system is required to undergo regular audits of its activities and inventories, covering ammonia producers for certificate generation, and traders and consumers for certificate transfers and retirements.
To qualify under the system, each VVB must hold accreditation from its national accreditation body and ensure its auditors have completed training to ISO 14064-3, covering verification and validation of greenhouse gas statements, as well as AEA-specific training on the certification system itself.
The AEA launched its system documents and global registry in late 2025, and the qualification of auditors now clears the way for facilities to be established in the registry and for ammonia certificates to be issued as part of the pilot.
AEA Executive Director Trevor Brown stated: "AEA is proud to be working alongside so many respected global leaders in verification and validation. While the AEA Ammonia Certification System provides the architecture to deliver high quality data, it is the auditors who deliver the trust that makes it so valuable."
Tanya Peacock, Managing Director, California and Hydrogen at EcoEngineers, pointed to growing commercial demand for verified data: "Interest in third-party verified ammonia data is increasing. As companies adhere to both voluntary and global policies, they are required to document embedded emissions for market access, and buyers seek chain-of-custody tracking for low-emission ammonia. Downstream customers, such as fertiliser producers and shipping firms, face pressure to verify emissions in their supply chains as they decarbonise. Credible verification is essential."
Rodrigo Pardo Patron, Director of Engineering at EnergyLink, remarked: "Independent verification provides confidence that the carbon intensity reported for low-emission ammonia is accurate and can be trusted by buyers and other stakeholders. EnergyLink is pleased to contribute our measurement and verification expertise to the AEA Ammonia Certification System as the market continues to grow."
Klaus Cao, Senior Manager at SGS, commented: "SGS is proud to be among the first qualified VVBs under the AEA Ammonia Certification System. Guided by our 'Impact Now for sustainability' commitment, we provide independent, rigorous audit and verification services to participants across the low-emission ammonia value chain, supporting them in demonstrating credible environmental attributes as the clean ammonia market scales and the global energy transition advances."
Bratin Roy, Global Head of Decarbonization and COO of the Sustainability Business Unit at TÜV SÜD, said: "TÜV SÜD is pleased to be approved by the Ammonia Energy Association as an Auditor for the AEA Ammonia Certification System. As the global ammonia industry advances toward low-carbon and renewable production pathways, credible and independent certification will be essential to building trust, ensuring transparency, and supporting the development of a robust ammonia value chain."
The pilot covers both pre-certification of facilities not yet constructed and certification of ammonia produced at operational facilities. Certificates are held and transferred on a global ammonia registry, with the AEA saying this enables full disclosure of environmental attributes to consumers and supports compliance with regional or global emissions reduction requirements.
The system is described as technology-neutral, covering all production pathways including fossil, renewable, and bio-based routes. It is said to use absolute, site-specific, measured greenhouse gas emissions within a well-to-gate boundary, including upstream emissions.
The pilot remains open to new participants and additional auditors. Companies wishing to join as a participant, observer, or auditor can contact the AEA at certification@ammoniaenergy.org or visit ammoniaenergy.org/certification.
