IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO Lines) has taken delivery of Lumi Aurora, an LPG dual-fuel ice-class very large gas carrier (VLGC), built at Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd.’s Okpo Shipyard in South Korea.
According to IINO Lines, the vessel is the only VLGC in the world to hold Ice Class IB certification under the Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules, which govern vessel operations in the Baltic Sea during winter. With icebreaker assistance, Lumi Aurora is said to be capable of navigating light ice conditions in the region during the winter season.
The vessel — the third LPG dual-fuel ship in the IINO Group’s fleet — is among the largest VLGC types, with a cargo tank capacity of 93,000 cbm and a gross tonnage of 54,068 GT. It measures 229.90 metres in length overall and 36.60 metres in beam, and sails under the Liberian flag.
In addition to LPG, the vessel is designed to carry ammonia — a fuel that contains no carbon and therefore does not emit CO₂ at the point of combustion.
IINO Lines notes that Lumi Aurora is capable of reducing CO₂ emissions compared with conventional vessels powered solely by heavy fuel oil. The delivery forms part of the company’s broader strategy under its medium-term management plan, 'Transformation for a Sustainable Future,' which covers the period from April 2026 to March 2031. Under this plan, IINO Group has set a target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The Tokyo-based shipowner has been engaged in the transportation of LPG and other liquefied gases since 1963, serving customers in Japan and overseas under medium- to long-term contracts.
