TUI Cruises puts both InTUItion-class ships on bio-LNG as fleet targets 50,000-tonne CO₂e saving in 2026

German cruise operator says bio-LNG use across two newbuilds has already cut 26,000 tonnes of CO₂e.

TUI Cruises says both vessels of its InTUItion class are now operating on bio-LNG following the commissioning of Mein Schiff Flow in June 2026, with the operator projecting combined greenhouse gas savings of around 50,000 tonnes of CO₂e across the full year.

The Hamburg-based cruise line said Mein Schiff Relax is running its entire Northern European summer season on bio-LNG, while Mein Schiff Flow has been bunkering the alternative fuel regularly in Barcelona since the start of the summer season and is expected to continue its use through the winter season.

Both ships are equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems capable of running on marine diesel or liquefied natural gas (LNG), with TUI Cruises noting that the use of renewable LNG — including bio-LNG and e-LNG — requires no technical modifications to the vessels.

As of July 2026, the operator claims to have saved approximately 26,000 tonnes of CO₂e through bio-LNG use compared with conventional fuel operation.

CEO Wybcke Meier stated: "We take responsibility along the entire value chain — from product development to ship operation. By using bio-LNG, we have already saved around 26,000 tonnes of CO₂e this year — in contrast to operating with conventional fuels (as of July 2026). In 2026 as a whole, it is expected to save around 50,000 tonnes of CO₂e."

The cruise operator explained that its emissions reduction approach is complemented by improved catalytic converters on both vessels, which are said to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions during port operations to a level comparable to Euro 6 limits. In addition, both ships are fitted with shore power connections, a feature TUI Cruises notes is standard across the entire Mein Schiff fleet. Shore power capability is described as particularly relevant given that time in port accounts for around 40% of a ship's operating time, during which on-board energy generation can be avoided.
