Belgian shipping company Exmar has announced that its vessel Antwerpen has completed its first commercial voyage using ammonia as fuel.
The voyage, which ran from China to India, saw the Antwerpen operate in ammonia dual-fuel mode. According to Exmar, the vessel performed fully in line with its expectations and design specifications, demonstrating that the technology can function in a commercial operating environment.
"Together with our partners, we continue to fine-tune the systems as we build on this outstanding achievement. We are proud of our crew for their excellent pioneering work," Exmar added.
Described as the world's first oceangoing vessel equipped with a dual-fuel ammonia engine, the midsize gas carrier (MGC) Antwerpen was developed in collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, engine maker WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions (formerly Wärtsilä Gas Solutions), and classification society Lloyd’s Register. It is capable of carrying up to 46,000 cbm of ammonia or LPG.
Antwerpen is the first in a planned series of four ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers, each named after a Belgian city.
Exmar Group specialises in floating maritime solutions for the transport, transformation, and storage of gas and liquid hydrocarbons, operating a fleet ranging from very large gas carriers (VLGCs) to pressurised vessels, as well as floating LNG production, storage, and regasification units.
