VTTI Dalian completes first large-scale 'green methanol' vessel loading

VTTI’s terminal in Dalian, China, has completed its first commercial vessel loading of large-scale "green methanol" under a long-term methanol storage and handling contract, the company has announced.

The cargo is destined for Shanghai, where it will be supplied as marine fuel, according to VTTI. The storage terminal specialist stated that the operation marks "an important step in establishing northeast China as a key logistics hub for sustainable marine fuels."

Janice Kuan, senior vice president commercial at VTTI, commented: “This milestone reflects our continued commitment to enabling the energy transition. By supporting long-term green methanol storage and handling at VTTI Dalian, we are helping our partners build reliable supply chains for cleaner marine fuels while advancing VTTI’s strategy to lead in sustainable infrastructure.”

VTTI Dalian is situated at Dalian Port in northeast China. The terminal operates as an independent public facility handling chemicals for producers and traders inland. It has four jetties capable of accommodating vessels up to 50,000 DWT, along with dedicated chemical storage and multimodal access. The facility is described by VTTI as "a critical logistics hub for sustainable fuel distribution."

VTTI did not specify whether the methanol loaded at Dalian was biomethanol produced from sustainable biomass or waste, or e-methanol produced from renewable hydrogen combined with captured CO₂.
