The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has opened recruitment for a head of climate action and clean air section, a P-5-level position based in London that will oversee the organisation's work on greenhouse gas emissions reduction and air pollution prevention from ships.

The role will lead a team supporting the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and related subsidiary bodies, according to the announcement posted on 26 May.

Key responsibilities include leading the Climate Action and Clean Air Section, supporting negotiations and policy development related to MARPOL Annex VI and IMO GHG measures, managing stakeholder engagement with member states, UN agencies and international partners, and overseeing technical cooperation activities, fuel consumption reporting and climate-related projects.

The position holder will also represent IMO at international meetings, including engagements related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

IMO is seeking candidates with at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in maritime, shipping, shipbuilding, maritime administration, classification societies or related sectors, according to the job posting.

Other requirements include expertise in IMO environmental regulations, particularly MARPOL Annex VI and GHG-related work, proven leadership and line management experience of at least five years, and skills in drafting, negotiation and stakeholder engagement.

Experience in maritime policy development and implementation is also required.
