Exmar lays keel for ammonia-powered midsize gas carrier

Belgian shipping company marks construction milestone for dual-fuel vessel at Hyundai Heavy Industries yard.

Exmar has laid the keel for its ammonia-powered midsize gas carrier at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ dry dock in South Korea.

The newbuilding, designated H8392, is the latest addition to Exmar’s fleet development programme focused on lower-carbon energy solutions.

The keel-laying took place at HHI’s yard this week, marking a key step in the construction sequence.

Exmar announced the development on LinkedIn, saying it looked forward to welcoming the new carrier into its fleet and that further construction updates would follow.

The keel-laying follows Exmar’s earlier naming of the Antwerpen and Arlon, described by the group as the world’s first ocean-going ammonia dual-fuel gas carriers.

Exmar is a Belgium-based gas shipping group operating LPG and ammonia carriers as well as LNG production, storage and regasification assets.
