Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has signed a contract with Greek shipping company Venergy Maritime Limited for the construction of two 157,000-tonne Suezmax crude oil tankers.

The agreement was signed on 2 April together with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. GSI said the vessels are based on a new-generation Suezmax design developed in-house.

According to the yard, the tankers will use fuel oil propulsion and will be equipped with an open-loop desulphurisation system. GSI added that the design focuses on high efficiency, environmental protection and safety, with features including high speed, low weight, reduced energy consumption and strong adaptability.

The shipbuilder said the vessels’ energy consumption, environmental performance and reliability have reached advanced levels for comparable ships worldwide.

The latest contract comes as GSI reports several other production milestones. The first 10,800-vehicle LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) under construction for South Korea’s HMM has recently completed sea trials.

GSI said the vessel is currently the world’s first dual-fuel car carrier with capacity for 10,000 vehicles under construction. It has a length of 230 metres, a breadth of 40 metres, a structural draught of 10.5 metres and a speed of about 19 knots.

The ship’s 14-deck garage arrangement is designed to allow flexible loading of different vehicle types, including electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and heavy trucks, with a maximum capacity of 10,800 vehicles. Designed by the 604 Institute, the vessel is said to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emissions requirements.

GSI has also delivered the second 111,000-tonne LNG dual-fuel crude oil/product tanker built for Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte. Ltd., nine months ahead of the contractual delivery schedule.

The series comprises eight vessels. The first was delivered in November 2025, while the remaining six are due for delivery before 2027.

According to GSI, the ships are a new generation of LNG dual-fuel LR II tankers developed by the yard, capable of operating on both fuel oil and LNG. During the construction of the second vessel, the company said its project team set a new record for dock construction cycle time for similar ships.

In the first quarter of 2026, GSI said it completed delivery of nine new vessels.
