RINA partners with Hanwha Group on battery-hybrid propulsion for ro-ro ferries


Classification society to provide regulatory compliance verification for hybrid battery systems on newbuilds and retrofits.

Classification society RINA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanwha Group to support the adoption of advanced battery-hybrid propulsion systems in the maritime sector, with particular emphasis on the ro-ro ferry segment.

The collaboration is intended to help speed up the move towards lower-emission vessels by supporting the shift from conventional internal combustion propulsion to hybrid battery systems, both in newbuildings and through retrofits of ships already in service.

According to RINA, the partnership combines Hanwha’s hardware expertise with its own regulatory and certification know-how in order to deliver integrated propulsion solutions that meet compliance requirements.

As part of the project, RINA will assess regulatory compliance and technical soundness for both classification and statutory certification. The society also said it will contribute market insights drawn from its experience in the ferry sector to support the deployment of propulsion systems tailored to this market segment.

RINA said the agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing more sustainable maritime technologies and supporting cleaner, more efficient ferry operations.

Battery-hybrid propulsion systems are increasingly being considered as a pathway to reducing emissions in the maritime sector, particularly for vessels operating on fixed routes with predictable power requirements, such as ferries.

The technology allows vessels to operate on battery power during portions of their voyage, reducing fuel consumption and emissions compared with conventional propulsion systems.
