Norway-based marine battery supplier Corvus Energy has launched Blue Whale NxtGen, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) energy storage system designed for vessel applications requiring high energy content and density.

The system, scheduled for first deliveries in Q4 2026, features cobalt-free LFP cells with a claimed operational lifespan of up to 15 years. The product incorporates a 1C charge/discharge rate, making it suitable for both energy storage and power-intensive operational modes, according to the company.

"Blue Whale NxtGen is more than a new product launch — it represents a strategic step forward for Corvus Energy and the maritime industry," said Fredrik Witte, chief executive officer of Corvus Energy. "Without compromising on Corvus' strong focus on quality, safety, security, and sustainability, we are introducing contract manufacturing to optimize cost, stronger focus in China, more robust diversified global sourcing, and the ability to swap battery cells without changing the product design."

The system is built on Corvus' NxtGen architecture, which combines modularized design with the company's fourth-generation battery management system (BMS). The platform is designed to allow battery cell replacement without requiring changes to the overall product design.

Ole Jacob Irgens, head of sales for Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia at Corvus Energy, said: "Our customers are asking for solutions that balance sustainability with strong business value. Blue Whale NxtGen delivers exactly that — higher energy density, longer lifecycle, and simplified installation, all backed by stronger global presence with expertise closer to our customers."

The company claims the system will help shipowners reduce capital expenditures and meet environmental, social, and governance targets through its extended lifespan and modular design. For shipyards, the system aims to provide optimized supply chain management, installation processes, and technical support.

Corvus Energy, headquartered in Bergen, supplies energy storage and fuel cell systems for maritime, offshore, and port applications. The company states it has delivered systems for more than 1,300 projects.
