BP Marine to stage lubes workshop

Workshop on lubrication requirements to be held in London next month.

BP Marine will stage a workshop on lubrication requirements entitled '2015 and beyond' at the upcoming IMPA London 2012 event next month.

The session will be held on September 12 at 10am in the Victoria Room at the QEII Conference & Events Centre in Westminster, London. It is free to attend.

Lubrication requirements for 2015 and beyond

Both slow steaming and sulphur content already have direct consequences for fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, lubricant consumption and environmental responsibility.

BP Marine has a wide range of Cylinder oils and TPEO available, providing owners and operators with a lubrication strategy for their vessels.

BP strategy allows customers to select a lubricant solution based on an individual vessel’s predominant operating conditions.

BP stresses that it is the only lube oil supplier to provide an 80 BN product which allows OEM recommended minimum feed rate requirements to be met under slow steaming conditions on the highest sulphur fuels.

From 2015, the shipping industry will have to face up to some of the biggest changes for 50 years driven by regulatory legislation and from this date will face the difficult decision to either:

- Burn MGO (0.1% Sulphur content) inside an emissions control area and pay a fuel premium.

- Fit an exhaust gas scrubber – most likely a hybrid system and continue to burn HFO.

- Switch to liquefied natural gas (LNG).

BP Marine lubricants will discuss the likely impact of this on the development of lubricant technology and offer its thoughts on what each option means for cylinder and trunk piston engine lubrication.

The discussion will be informed by:

- Field experience that high BN products provide improved neutralisation capacity, and hence better corrosion protection and thus a greater margin of safety across the fuel sulphur range while slow steaming.

- OEM inputs, feed rates strategies and recommendations.

- Acknowledgment that the demands on cylinder lubricants caused by slow steaming and a more diverse range of fuels is a critical issue in cylinder lubricant choice.

- A broad view of the implications for lubrication needs for the next decade based on adoption of and issues relating to the three ‘2015 choices’ outlined.

Delegates will be able to join for coffee on arrival, from 9.15am onwards. A delegate lunch is also provided for those attending, as well as an invitation for entrance into the VIP BP Lounge (a VIP hospitality area for guests), which is open from 10am to 5pm throughout the event.

BP Marine clients, as well as delegates at the general IMPA Technical Conference may also wish to pre-register for entrance into the VIP BP Lounge.

The Annual IMPA Exhibtion & Conference will be held on September 12-13 2012.
