Fuel costs on the agenda in Madrid


Event participants discuss solutions to increase ship efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.



"Technical and software solutions to increase ship efficiency" was the topic of the first Germanischer Lloyd (GL) Forum in Madrid.

About 50 participants from shipyards, shipping companies, the navy, spanish authorities and engineering consulting offices attended the event to learn about GL's approach to make ships more efficient.

"Mid-term and long-term fuel costs are expected to range from USD 500 to 1000 per tonne, including expected future surcharges for CO2 emissions. This will put significant pressure on the shipping industry to reduce fuel consumption", explained Karsten Fach, Vice President of GL's Engineering Services, opening the debate on ship efficiency.

He answered questions on why efficient ships are needed and how to cope with technical challenges for ships in service. In addition, he presented software solutions for shipowners and shipyards.

Volker Höppner, Managing Director of GL's consulting company Futureship, looked at how fuel consumption for ships in service can be reduced and the energy-saving potential for newbuilds.

GL's FutureShip service offers a range of services addressing both, ships in service and planned newbuildings. Design reviews, line optimization, trim optimization or operational fuel consumption analyses are examples of how GL aims to help clients achieve substantial fuel reduction through a combination of expertise, software and procedures.

Meanwhile, also at the GL Forum, the Spanish Shipowner Association ANAVE gave a presentation on the challenges raised by current and foreseen environmental rules for Spanish Shipowners and the Spanish Shipyard Association UNINAVE looked at "the future of European shipbuilding".
