US cruise operator drops surcharge


Seattle-based firm eliminates fuel surcharge on all 2009 bookings.

Seattle-based operator Cruise West has announced that it will be eliminating its fuel surcharge on all 2009 bookings for customers who pay in full by January 30th.

The company's decision to suspend its fuel surcharge follows similar moves made by rival cruise operators including Carnival Corporation & plc, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Windstar Cruises, Crystal Cruises and MSC Cruises, who have also decided to remove their existing fuel surcharge this month following the recent decline in crude and bunker prices.

Cruise West said that it was also extending its early booking discount for cruises to Alaska. Excursions range from three-night/four-day to 24-night/25-day and start at $1,149 per person before savings are applied. The company said guests can save up to $690 for a 24-night cruise to Alaska, based on double occupancy, with the waived fuel surcharge promotion.

Cruise West specialises in small-ship voyages to a number of destinations worldwide, including Alaska, Mexico, Panama Canal, the Danube River, Costa Rica, Japan, Vietnam, South Pacific and Galapagos.
