Cepsa becomes first MFM bunker supplier in the port of Gibraltar

Spanish firm is also the port of Gibraltar's only RMK 500 supplier.

Cepsa has become the first bunker supplier in the port of Gibraltar to use mass flow meters (MFMs) - a system that is designed to provide a highly accurate measurement of the quantity of product supplied.

The new development follows Cepsa's installation of Promass flow meters - produced by the Swiss manufacturer Endress+Hauser AG - aboard two of its barges in Algeciras last year, when it became the first supplier in the Strait of Gibraltar to use MFMs for marine fuel deliveries.

Cepsa will be operating in the port of Gibraltar with the newly built Green Cadiz, which has MFM technology installed. The company is now the only supplier offering MFM deliveries on both sides of the Bay of Algeciras (Bay of Gibraltar). Furthermore, Cepsa will be the only operator in the port of Gibraltar to supply RMK 500 marine fuel - along with other fuel grades such as HS380, LS380 and marine gas oil (MGO).

Commenting on the advantages of using MFMs, Cepsa said: "The new technology, based on the Coriolis affect, enables the amount of fuel supplied to be determined by mass. This in turn avoids calculations being made from measurements by volume corrected by its density and temperature, and also eliminates the possible effect that the presence of air in the flow could have.

"In addition to the high levels of fuel supply precision, the innovative mass flow meter delivery system reduces refueling operation times by up to three hours and is totally transparent, as it is monitored and assisted continuously and simultaneously. All the measurement system equipment is calibrated, certified and sealed according to the Directive 2014/32/EU (MID), guaranteeing its integrity and reliability."

Cepsa reiterated its intention on Thursday to extend the use of MSMs to other ports where it operates, such as Barcelona, Las Palmas, Tenerife or Huelva. This was previously announced by the company in October.
