Number change in Gibraltar

New three-digit prefix is introduced for landline numbers.

Landline telephone numbers in Gibraltar have been changed this month to include a new three-digit prefix.

Following its implementation on October 1st, phone users will now be required to dial 200 in front of local landline numbers.

The new numbering plan for Gibraltar had been running in tandem with the old system up until the end of September.

As from the beginning of this month, only new numbers may be dialled, which means that all existing landline numbers can only be dialled in 8-digit form, together with the country code if calling from abroad.

If a 5-digit telephone number now dialled, callers will hear an annoucement in English and Spanish advising of a misdialled number and advising them to dial 200 in front of the number.

The number change will be completed on December 31 2008 when the announcement period will end. Mobile numbers will not be altered.

Bunker Index will shortly be updating its directory in Gibraltar to incorporate the new prefix.
